Heart Transplant

History must pay tribute to Denise Anne Darvell who died from a road traffic accident on 3rd December 1967. She was the world’s very first heart donor. We should also remember Dr Christiaan N Barnard, whose expertise revolutionized heart surgery and without whom the story of heart transplant might have a very different outcome. Ironically, Dr Barnard died from a suspected heart attack himself at the age of 78 while he was on holiday at Paphos in Cyprus on September 2, 2001. The first recipient of a donated heart was Louis Washkansky who received Denise Anne Darvell’s donated heart and made history by living for 17 days following surgery. Since those very early beginnings in 1967, many thousands of people have received donated hearts and combination heart and lungs, enabling them to live life to the fullest for many years longer than they would have been able to if heart transplant surgery had not become available.

When asked if he wanted to think about the offer of a transplanted heart when this surgery had never been done before, Louise Washkansky was reported to have replied:

"If that’s the only chance, I will take it... there’s nothing to think about. I can’t go on living like this. The way I am now is not living."
